Knowledge Transfer Partnerships
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are one of the important national grant schemes by which knowledge transfer of new and innovative technologies and processes can be achieved
This is a cost-effective national scheme for companies enabling them to access the knowledge from university or college academics and experts. These Partnerships encourage university/college interaction and collaboration, and enable the flow of new ideas and innovative technologies and processes into the company
KTPs and shorter-KTPs, the latter being shorter versions of the scheme, involve a student or graduate - the Associate - with specialised knowledge. They work on an agreed and approved project which the business has identified as a priority area, collaborating with the academic partner.
Projects can relate to technological, productivity or organisational developments and improvements within a participating company.
In the case of KTPs, a project can last between one and three years. Shorter-KTPs are more appropriate for projects taking six to nine months and are aimed at addressing more short term, tactical business issues, but which can also lead to a longer KTP.
The overall aim is to bring about a significant change or advancement in some aspect of a company’s activities, allowing it to contribute to raising the innovative capabilities of the region’s economy.
One North East additionally funds shorter-KTP projects within the North East if the project meets certain criteria. These regional funds can be accessed through Business Link.
Businesses of all sizes in most industries as well as public sectors can take part.
Areas of industry in which KTPs are particularly encouraged are:
• Energy and the environment;
• Healthcare and life sciences;
• Process industries;
• Emerging technologies;
• Digital technology and new media.
